I literally have no clue what spherical harmonics are. Oh hang on there’s an explanation here on Paul Bourke’s site.
The following closed objects are commonly called spherical harmonics although they are only remotely related to the mathematical definition found in the solution to certain wave functions, most notable the eigenfunctions of angular momentum operators.
Um yeah. That didn’t really help.
But thankfully Kyle Philips has worked out how to makes some awesome JavaScript eye candy with them. Kyle ported Karsten Schmidt‘s amazing Processing library ToxicLibs to JavaScript and this example uses three.js to render in WebGL.
I’m sure we’ll be featuring many many more posts about Toxilibs.js, three.js and Processing.js. But if you can’t wait I’d definitely spend some time reading up on these incredibly useful creative coding tools.
